SCAL 6 Nothing showing up in layers or document tabs

I created a simple shape (just unioned some shapes together). I can select the design but it isn't showing up in either the layers or document tabs at the side. I want to size it (not just drag the bounding arrows) and create a shadow layer - both of which I should be able to do in the document box at the side. Can anybody help me figure out what I am doing wrong?

So, open the Fill & Stroke Panel on the right. With the shape selected, make sure (for now) that both the Fill and Stroke have Color selected and to the right of that both are set to anything but white. If you still don't see anything, please post a screenshot here with the shape selected and this panel.
