Help with layering please…

I’ve got a question regarding my image. What I am trying to do is a two layer decal. It will be black on top of red. My question is, how do I get the stuff in the middle of the letters out. I want that blank so the red shows thru the top layer. Thanks

I just responded on the FB group. We're more likely to get other opinions once I see why Knockout isn't the answer.
