letter correlation to dingbat???

THis is something that is jsut going to show my ignorance but I need to know how I can figure out what letter on the keyboard corelates to which character in a dingbat. Does that make sense? I am trying to convert dingbats to svg's and need to know how to pick a certain one without have to go letter by letter in inkscape

I use the font thing. free download, just google it.
