I am working on a file to cut a template for a glass plate. My cub scouts are going to use glass etch to make the plates for their parents for Christmas.
I altered the file in Photo shop elements saved as a pdf. Opened it inkscape and saved it as a Svg. Then when I went to open it in scal it doesn't show up.
My guess is the font I am using is to fancy but I tried a plain one and it still didn't work. It is a nativity silloette with the words silent night written over it. It sure would look good if I can get it to work. I will try to upload the svg file.

Re: Svg files not showing up.
Is the font installed on your computer? When you made it an svg file did you go to Path>Object to Path. Then Path>Union or Combine and then go to file and Save As? I know you have to have the font installed on your computer in order to have it work. Also when you do the Path thing the arrow that says Select and Transform items on the left side will make a box around the object and then do the path thing. I hope this helps. I have this happen to me so have to go back and do it over.

I"m having the same problem but I didn't use a font. I found a color page of a penguin, took him all apart in Paint Shop Pro, got it all into Inkscape, used the trace bitmap and everyting looks great. I save it and can open it back up in inkscape, shows up great but when I try to import it into SCAL I get an empty box. Any ideas? I've attached the file.

Try this one. I opened yours up in Inkscape and used the nodes arrow, clicked on each piece one at a time, then went to the arrow above it to put a bracket around it, , copied the piece, opened up another Inkscape, pasted the piece and kept doing that till I copied each piece into the new Inkscape window. Then went to Path> combind and then file and save as. Kind of time consuming. I think you might be missing a step in Inkscape.

Thank YOu! I figured I'm missing a step I'm just not sure what.
What is a node arrow? Where do I find that and how do I put the bracket around it. Frustrating! I actually thought I had an idea of what I was doing LOL

Jill, I opened up your file in Inkscape, copied it and opened up another Inkscape and pasted it there and redid it with all the steps. I took out the little openings in Silent Night and just made it plain. Will this work for you?

Thank you this is perfect just what I needed. I guess I need to learn inkscape and not try to avoid it by doing my work in Photo shop. I just started playing with SCAL and I want to do it all now.
Thanks so much my cub scouts will love this and now thanks to you I will have it done in time for them to do it this week. I am off to cut it.

Jill, I opened your file and it seemed that you did not trace the bitmap, just saved it as a svg. You have to select the file, Path>Trace Bitmap and then save as a svg. Once I did that, even though you had named it svg, it worked fine.
It has to actually be a vector-based file for SCAL to read it.
