Broken Silhoutte SD.....any suggestions?

Post by steven252000 »

So I have a newly broken SD and wanted to see if by chance anyone had any suggestions I could try. My nephew knocked my Silhoutte SD from the table to the floor and now it is broken. It will still cut but has issues with the carriage and powering on. The carriage stays all the way to the left after being used and powering off. When you power it back on it tries to moved the carriage to the left even though it is already all the way to the left. Therefor it is jusing making a racket and gonna end up breaking the belt. If you power the unit off and move the carriage by hand all the way to the right seems to work a bit better. When you power the unit on it slowly moves to the left then after a few seconds rapidly moves to the left and when it gets to the left limit it makes a racket (sound) as it is still trying to go left then it stops and is ready to cut. Don't really know what I might could do to try and fix that problem if there is even anything that can be done. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to let me know. It was not entirely my nephews fault. My daughter got on the computer when she was not supposed to and called the nephew over to see something and he got caught up in the wires. It did not crack, break any pieces that we saw just fell and now the carriage problems and it is just on powering on. Gotta love kids......;)

Assuming you have SCAL software, try a large positive offset for X in the calibrate menu.
.
BTW ... you need not be a kid to tear up the cutter. I was cutting a cereal box too fast and too deep and when it came to a 90 degree turn it jammed and starting making the loud clicking noise. The next "normal" cut was way off location and cut the mat deep where there was no paper.
.
See the jpg for where to change the calibrate values.
.
Good luck ... not sure it will work for you.

Not that I would suggest you try to mend the cutter but I had something like this with my embroidery machine, the arm got caught on something that was placed behind it (without my knowledge, I always keep that area clear!!!) and the arm & belt decided to almost part company along with a lot of noise!!!!.
the arm (head in the case of the cutter) is fixed to the belt, the belt moves and drags the head either left or right as needed so what it sounds like is the head is not holding onto the belt or the head is now a little off from where it was - it's still moving but the machine thinks the head is in a different place to where is actually/physically is.

now, with my EM, I opened the case and looked at the belt, found where the arm should have been (it was more compressed and had the indentation of the arm claps in it) and managed to move it back into place. the next couple of sewouts where a little off but now it seems OK.

might be worth finding out if you have a repair person in your area who could fix it.
Or you might be able to return it for repair (but that would incurr extra fees like shipping & a possible out of/not covered by warranty fee

I guess it comes down to what is more expensive, to have it repaired, get a new one or try and see if you can reset the head on the belt.
the last one might be an option if you do decide to buy a new replacement - if you can then fix that one you have a spare and if not, then you still have a machine that is working and some spare bits for the new one :)

Thanks for the replies. The calibration thing did not work. I guess it is just broke. I can get it to cut fine. It is just when turned on where the problem is. Guess we can get it to limp by until we get use to our new machine. Because at some point I am sure it will break completely.

You might so a google search for craft robo repairs. The SD is a newer version of the craft robo which had a large following in the maker (like hackers for stuff) community so you might get lucky with some info.
