Cricut Imagine alternative

Post by josephgene »

i wanted to purchase a cricut for my wife and found to my dismay that i cannot use custom .svg files for it anymore for some silly lawsuit. (More about money than the people using machines, right?)

What is an alternative to the cricut imagine? My wife is in love with the fact that the imagine will print and cut. I can create custom .svg files using adobe illustrator. Also - is there machine you would recommend that does the same as the imagine that i can simply use illustrator for?

thanks
-Joe!

Welcome...just to get you started,.. because I can not completely answer your question about illustrator...but the link above will lead you to some cutter reviews about print and cut.

Your wife is lucky you can make the svg's...and I think you can just then open them in scal or ecal and use the eclips...but you will need to wait for another answer here...this will let you know someone is listening and I will help you keep this to the top for more info.

I make and alter lots of svg files in illustrator, and then import them into the ecal software for the sizzix eclips. The Silhouette Cameo will do the same thing using their upgraded design software. Both of these cutters are very popular and are compatible with svg files. They will both cut scored lines. The both do print-2-cut. I think you probably can't go wrong with either one.

I use the eClips. The software is eCal (the SCAL version) and compatible with SCAL and can cut svg's. Print and cut is awesome as well as the finer cuts you can make with this machine. Can use their own cartridges "if you want", but I haven't bought one yet. Use svgs or the many designs out there.

You can add on a pen holder and put just about any size pen or marker in it (it adjusts to fit) to draw images or text instead of cutting. And you can do the draw and then the cut from one design.

Others have purchased the Cameo and I am not familiar with that machine, but it also has good reviews.

There are other machines out there and prices are different, but these 2 would be comparable to what you would pay for the C.

You can not cut your own graphics with that cutter and scal.

Both the Silhouette Cameo and the Sizzix eClips have print and cut features and are a comparable price with the Imagine. Even better, both will work with any printer so you aren't tied into buying ink cartridges specifically for the Imagine.

I have the cameo and love it! I also have a blackcat! I bought the cameo to specifically do print and cuts. You print it on your home printer with registration marks, then put it in the cameo and it will automatically find the marks and cut the graphics out for you! Some cutters you have to calibrate and that can sometimes be a pain! I don't know about the others but cameo makes print and cut as easy as an image! IMHO.
