I can only suggest that instead of path->union, use path->exclusion. I took your file, did a path->break apart and then did the exclusion. It opened just fine for me in SCAL2. I've attached your fixed file. HTH!

I'm not sure what exactly is happening with your original file, but all I did was copy your path in the original file and paste it into a new inkscape file and it worked in SCAL2. HTH

Maybe I wasn't clear... I didn't make that file, it's just a low-quality picture from another website. It is quite lovely and I was hoping that someone had made something similar that they might be willing to share.

You "open" a SCUT file in SCAL (that's the file type associated with saving a project directly from SCAL).
You "import" an SVG file (that's a vector file you create with Inkscape or some other program that can save/alter/create vector files).
