Thanks for your reply. 47pre4 is actually what I was using (I think its the only version that will work at all with Snow Leopard). Anyways, I recreated the file on my laptop (older version of Inkscape) and all is fine importing to SCAL. So it must be an Inkscape issue.

Jancy, Thanks so much. I did the exact same thing (several times actually) and it still doesn't work, but your file works fine. I had to upgrade to a new build of Inkscape though (because I updated my Mac to Snow Leopard), so I wonder if there is a problem with the convert to path command. What a pa...

Hi! I am new here, but I just dealt with this issue a couple of days ago. I am also running a Mac with 10.5.6. I had never even heard of X11, but it was there on my computer, with the latest version. I found it under Applications/Utilities/X11. Check there and see if you already have it.
