How To Sharpen Edges on Clipart

I am new to inkscape and have a question --- when I copy clipart and import it into inkscape I cant get clear and precise edges on some of the text and shapes - it seems to be distorted when I trace to bitmap --- Please help ---- what am I doing wrong??????

When you do a bitmap there is that viewer box that opens up.. You will see a brighten button.. Click on the box with the numbers in it and preview until it looks right... You will have to adjust those numbers...

If you get familiar with the paint bucket technique for tracing it gives you a lot more control over what the edges look like. Basically you zoom your image on the screen until the bitmap version looks smooth there, then trace with the default settings, see how that looks, if you don't like it backspace (to delete the trace), try another setting, click the paint bucket again, and repeat until it is just how you like it. Each iteration of trial and error only takes few seconds and you are not looking at a preview, but the real thing.
