Saying in time SCAL will be stopped by them,and that everytime you have no choice but to upgrade your firmware if you do it'll in time not be a workable machine.Well guess what i will continue to use scal as long as i am able hence why i will not buy a gypsy as they have something that will block scal in it and will continue to do so in any future gypsy updates they do to the machine. so folks becareful if your'e tempted to buy one.

Re: i see provo craft is up to scare mongering again
I swear.. Their scare tactics are really P****ing me off... I used to really like my cricut, but I'm seriously going to ditch it just because of things like this...
Whats wrong with someone having a completly diff package from yours...
They just want to control the ENTIRE market.. Kinda like Microsoft used to be.. They better watch out or the people who are really techie and push the market envelope are going to "dump" them and they will only have left complete newbies who will not question them... kinda like robots...
(o.k. I'm stepping down off my soapbox now...) LOL

Hi:
I have no idea what Provo Craft did, or did not say about SCAL, but the only reason I even considered buying the Cricut was because of the availability of SCAL. I absolutely would not buy a die-cutting machine if I could not design and cut my own patterns. In fact I orginally was looking at other products because I didn't know about SCAL.

Another good reason not to buy cartridges or a gypsy.
And a good reason to never allow automatic updates of drivers, etc.
Just sayin'

Re: i see provo craft is up to scare mongering again
I saw the Gypsy on HSN the other day when it was a 'World Launch'. I thought - hey, that's kinda cool, too bad I don't have that for SCAL.
Then I thought, oh, wait, I DO! It's called my cheapy netbook, and not only can I design my OWN stuff on it with SCAL & Inkscape, I can read my email too! A much better value than something like the Gypsy, being only a few $$ more!

How will the gypsy block scal? Also where did you read this?
Thanks=)
Thanks=)
Re: i see provo craft is up to scare mongering again
a provocraft admin left an answer on there message board to questions being asked by someone read it yesterday. And actually stated that they had not persued scal in the courts because of the up and coming design products they were going to produce would make scal useless. But,the answer also stated that they would in there gypsy programme and any future updates for it and the firmware would definitely be blocking scal.
Thought seeing as some people might might a gypsy that i would leave a message here.

Can you link to that message? I"d like to write a response there, not that they will listen. But I bought my Cricut E because of the availability of SCAL. If that had not been the case, I would have just saved up for one of the more expensive cutters that has their own software program and bypassed Cricut altogether.

Re: i see provo craft is up to scare mongering again
FWIW, I'm a Software Engineer. Not that that gives me any special knowledge of this case, but I have a general idea of some of the issues involved.
1. I'm surprised SCAL still exists. It looks and feels EXTREMELY similar to PC's Design Studio. I would think PC could sue Craft Edge out of existence based on that alone.
2. There's this little law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that makes it very difficult for companies to reverse engineer communications protocols. I would think PC would have a good case to sue Craft Edge for "hacking" how the Expression talks to the computer.
3. SCAL provides a good service to PC while they work on their own software. It helps draw people who might consider one of the more expensive machines with their more flexible software. We bought an Expression yesterday because of the convenience of the cartridges AND because of SCAL. We have a Mac and I very much appreciate SCAL being available for my platform of choice.
4. I hope PC does come up with some good software. Many of the other cutter machines - Pazzles, Wishblade, etc. - seem to come with powerful software. I didn't do any hand-on evaluation, but from the little research I did, it sounds like there's some good stuff out there. Unless PC decides to support the Mac, I'm "stuck" with SCAL. If PC's future software is super-awesome, I'm sure SCAL will still have a niche to serve - it's focus on SVG, or it could go in some other direction that compliments PC's offering. I've seen many people who have both DS and SCAL.
5. PC could very well change the communications protocol in such a way that SCAL stops working. Whether intentionally - to kill SCAL - or just in the process of updating the capabilities. That's the way the game works. So warning people that they may change their comms protocol and SCAL may stop working isn't scare mongering; it's the truth. But saying they WILL change the protocol to intentionally break SCAL is - and evil, IMHO.

P.S. Hi. We just got an Expression yesterday. We spent the evening playing around with it. My wife - the scrapbooker - is very pleased with the quality of what came on the cartridges, and very pleased with the real cost (not retail price) of them compared to Stampin' Up or Creative Memories assets. I think we'll be buying cartridges at $10-30 AND using SCAL for more custom work. PC makes $$$ Craft Edge makes $$$. Everyone wins.

Re: i see provo craft is up to scare mongering again
I talked to the Gypsy product manager at CHA and told him I thought SCAL was good for Cricut sales for the reasons several of you have pointed out as I am also among those who would never have bought a Cricut had SCAL not been available. He told me my point was well taken. He also said they were not agressively pursuing SCAL at this time because it was not cutting into their cartridge sales. (I told him I was not surprised since I have 12 of them myself)
In the case mentioned here, PC didn't start the discussion, a MB member made a threat which PC responded to.
The Gypsy can update the Cricut firmware and will have to in order to work so it will periodically and create blocks to SCAL whether intentional or unintentional. I think the future product that will render SCAL moot they are referring to is not a block, but additional software for the Gypsy or PC that will let users do what SCAL can do. They get asked for this over and over and they know this is what their customers want. The best strategy in my mind is to use SCAL discreetly and at the same time treat PC respectfully. If you are going to write them a letter, please be diplomatic, and mention how much you have spent on PC products because of SCAL. The last thing we want to do is stir them up to sue Todd.
Another point, if you are trying to maintain a certain version of firmware for SCAL, do not let anyone connect a Gypsy to your Cricut unless you are standing right there to make sure they do not update your firmware!
