I want to select two things to combine in Inkscape. I click on the first and the handles appear then I hold down the shift and click again but the 2nd thing doesn't get the handles and I can't combine. Is this how to select 2 objects? What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help.

Is it possible that the second object is part of a group or already combined with something else?

It could have been combined with something else. I don't really know. I am still trying to figure this out so here is my question:
If I want to select 2 different things and combine them do I click on the first one then press shift and click on the second? Is that how you can select more than one thing?

Yes, you can either hold down the shift key while clicking, or you can use the selection tool (the arrow at the upper left) and draw a selection box around the objects (You can use the shift key with this method too).

Thanks! That was very helpful. I'll try it. Learning something new every day.
