out of my league

I downloaded this file from google images. I've done what I could with it in inkscape -- it had two lines around the outside, so I "simplified path" and deleted a lot of them.
I can't for the life of me get rid of the extra line going from the trunk to the lower right hand corner of the tree, and in Normal display mode, it's even worse!!

Can someone fix the file for me and tell me what it is I did wrong? Thanks so much.

You have three lines not connected. From the right side of the tree trunk there is a line that goes right into the tree leaves. I have tried to connect them but can't but I know Heather probably will. If you use the magnifying glass and enlarge your svg in Inkscape, you can see where the lines are unconnected.

Oops, the line goes from the left side of the tree trunk up thru the right side of the branches. The right side also has unconnected lines

You have three open lines. See the image below. You need to connect the end nodes of each of the colored lines. You have also used Object/Group. You need to ungroup this before you can do most of the Path operations. Select all three of these lines, Control K (Path/Combine), then use the node tools to connect the end nodes.

You're right -- I have three separate areas. I can't seem to select one node from one and one node from another to join them -- that's why I joined them together, hoping I'd be able to access both sets of nodes. I still can't get it right. Looks okay in outline mode, but still have a triangle in normal view.

When I bring it to SCAL, the normal tree looks great, but the error shows in the shadow.

You have to ungroup them (Control A, then Object/Ungroup), then select all three lines and Path/Combine (control k). Then you can connect the end nodes.

Heather, I thought you might like to see the finished product. It cut really well. Since the image was public domain, I'll post the file in the SVG Nature area.
Thanks again for your help.
