Breat apart feature in Path

Hope this makes sense 
I was making a svg file with lots of detail. In the Path mode then break apart feature, I was having trouble moving all the parts and grouping them back in order. Then it dawned on me to hold down the shift key and then select each part I wanted to move. Selected each piece in their own boxes, then I could use the select tool and move them all at once even though they are still broken apart. Hope this makes sense, if not I'll try again.
