Just a quick question does anyone know if 24x12 mats will work with the baby bug?

Yes, you just change the mat size to 12x24 in SCAL. I just made successful true 12" cuts on a homemade mat with my baby bug.
With cutting the 12x24 mats you will have some minor issues like the hanging hole now being on an edge, just load the mat so that is away from the machine. Another issue is the width is slightly narrow, and the lines will be a little off.
Another option, if you don't want the full 24" length is to make your own mat using a flexible kitchen cutting mat and your choice of adhesive.

Heather,
are the kitchen mats thinner. maybe just a hair. do we need to adjust our blade depth or keep settings as we are used to for certain cuts. thanks.

I think they are just a little thinner. I just tried it the other day, so I haven't experimented with it a whole lot yet.
