Question about sharing files I downloaded
Question about sharing files I downloaded
Hi, someone on this board is looking for an apron pattern. I have one that I downloaded from this board last May. I've searched the board and cannot find it and the download gives me no clue. Since I don't want to get into trouble with the original designer I'm wondering if I can post it acknowledging that I did not do it?

Re: Question about sharing files I downloaded
Do you have the name of the file as it was named on the forums? Maybe we could do a search for the file name and find the original post that way. I looked through Objects, Food, Misc. and didn't find it (based on subjects) either.
Re: Question about sharing files I downloaded
The only thing I have is the download title. It was apron%20tag.svg
Any more info would be appreciated!

Re: Question about sharing files I downloaded
Unfortunately, I didn't get any hits on the file name. Not sure that I can help you any further. If I run across the original, I'll let you know!
Re: Question about sharing files I downloaded
Not problem, I just wanted to grant a request from this boardmember for an apron and wasn't sure if I could "regift" it to her by posting it on this board. I didn't want an incident to occur because I shared someone else's design that had at one time been posted here.
So I still don't have an answer to that question.
Thanks for trying.

Re: Question about sharing files I downloaded
I don't think it would be proper for you to post a file unless you made the file.

Re: Question about sharing files I downloaded
So it is ok to download a file from a clipart site or scan it from a coloring book, mess with it in Inkscape and post it? Is that the distinction? So long as you Inkscape it, which maintains it's integrity makes it possible to break apart so someone can cut it and then that svg file belongs to you?
Now I'm really confused about the fine line of original design and modifying someone else's design so that it can be cut.
Hmmmmmm.

Re: Question about sharing files I downloaded
you can only do that if it's not a copyright protected image. if the clipart allows for something like that, then yes you can post the file. but not if the clipart artist prohibits reproduction or distribution of the image in any way.papasue wrote:So it is ok to download a file from a clipart site or scan it from a coloring book, mess with it in Inkscape and post it? Re: Question about sharing files I downloaded
But the question still is: who "owns" the svg file? The clip art provider or the Inkscape person you cut it up?
If this is the way it is then everyone who posts an svg file should say where the original image came from don't you think?

Re: Question about sharing files I downloaded
Good question! What happens if two people download the same clipart, then convert it using inkscape and then both post it? Who owns it? Both have "created it".
Personally I would have thought that if the file had been posted to the board for sharing originally, and now cannot be located, why would the original creator have an issue with it being reposted? As long as the reposter is not claiming it as their own, and has stated it belongs to another member on the board and was posted here previously.
Just my opinion.
