Not terribly original but with a LOT of help from Jancy, I figured out how to make this in in inkscape. I've hopefully attached the picture and svg file below.

OK I am trying to recreate what you ahve done. I see how you have all three layers of the word so that whent hey cut out they layer int he different colours.
I have followed Jancy's instructions on how to connect letters/weld a title and that has worked fine.
Now how do you get to the two other layers you have done which I guess are more background images?

Panic over I have worked it out.
I think the termp "mat" confused me and I was thinking a mat was the work area we were using, not a mat being the same as a shadow.
So I have found the instructions on making a mat and they are making complete sense.

This is a great place to find a lot of help - thanks everyone.
