Font with open centers

I hope I can explain this well enough that you can help me. I'm looking for a font that I can use to make custom photo mats. The words would be cut out of the mat instead of cut out of another paper and applied to the mat). The problem I have is that it's a big PITA to place all the individual cutouts that a lot of letters have. For example: If I have an "a" I have to add the little circle that forms the "inside" of the "a". (also letters like b, d, e, g, o, p, q)
Not sure what that kind of font is called (open font??). I know the difference between sarif and sans serif but I can't find anything on Google.
EDIT: I guess I'm looking for something along the lines of a stencil font but doesn't look all military.
