You can use any font. I think the easiest way to have a solid outline is to make a duplicate of the letter before you Path/Intersection. Then do the Path/Intersection like before. Select the extra letter and set the fill to nothing (so you can see how it looks) and the stroke to a width that you like the look of. Use Path/Stroke to path. Select your outline and the patterned letter and Path/Union. Hope I am making sense. Way too little sleep and not enough caffeine.
