Use gypsy and SCAL without firmware issues

Will updating my cricut or gypsy hinder my ability to use SCAL2???? So I'm sure this question has been asked before, so I apologize. I just cannot find the answer, and I know you wonderful people will know. I am tempted to get a gypsy....they are getting super cheap and so many people love theirs. The last thing I want to do is not be able to use SCAL with my cricut, so I'm scared to update ANYTHING. I understand that SCAL 3 will not work with cricut at all, but will newer firmware versions make our current cricuts not work with SCAL 2?? I have DS, but I don't want to update with the newest cartridges in case the update would prevent the use of SCAL! Am I being paranoid? Thanks in advance for your help and advice!

I updated all the carts about a month and a half or two months ago and no problem. There are two downloads there...I just did the fonts not the program update download...but I don't think the program update for DS was different though, anyway.
