PC making SCAL unusable.....RUMOR???

I heard just yesterday a rumor that PC is working on a way to render SCAL unusable.... is this possible??? Can they make a firmware update that blocks SCAL??? i don't understand why they don't just reduce the cost of carts... with the amount of people reselling them on ebay and such, PC is still losing money on a "new" sale.
Anyone else heard this or is is really "just a rumor" to scare us???

Unless you have DS and buy the new carts, there isn't any reason for you to update your Firmware which may or may not have a block built into the file. I don't have DS, so I don't need to update my Firmware, so there is no way that PC can block me from using my SCAL.

Hmmm, I just got DS for Christmas too, but yet to install it....
For those with DS, do you have to authorize new updates or are they automatic like Windows??? Meaning if I install now and they release an update that WILL block SCAL in the future, will DS automatically update or do I need to say yes to it. If I ignore any updates, I shouldn't have a problem then, in theory, right???

You have to go to their site and download the update. It's not automatic.

Tink,
PC hasn't blocked SCAL in well over a year, despite multiple opportunities as it revamped CDS to support Gypsy. Not only that, but new Cricuts now ship SCAL ready so that today's Cricut buyers never have to mess with firmware at all. So while PC can block SCAL with future updates at any time, the trend seems to be going in the opposite direction, and current users always have the option of simply not updating their firmware until Todd has a chance to workaround the new block.

I'm still using firmware version 2.1.

There is one possible way this could happen. Rumor also has it that PC is going to release a new version of the Expression at CHA. Supposedly it would be wireless. This won't prevent those of us with the older Cricut machines from using SCAL, but it would be a new machine incompatible with SCAL.
