Looking for something that shows how to make them from scratch. Not how to make them from coloring book pages.

Anyone know of a simple or video tutorial?

I am new to drawing in inkscape but would like to be able to draw some nice paper piecings!

Are you wanting to draw the files directly in Inkscape? You would use the tools to draw your image. Then the easiest way to make your background is to combine all of your pieces and make a linked offset. Convert that to Path too. You might need to use the node tool to reshape the background where pieces meet. Select your original image, Path/Break apart. Move pieces by color.

You could also use a wide stroke width when you draw your image. You would make the line width the same as you would want the lines between the pieces. Select all of the image, Path/Stroke to path. with all of the lines selected, Path/Union, then Path/Break apart. Move the pieces by color.

Here is a good place to learn about the tools. I usually use the bezier tool when I draw. http://www.learndigitaldesign.com/watch ... hp?video=8
