I have been playing around with changing dings into bmp then to svg. Then opening in SCAL. I like the look, it seems to be crisper and I can add different colors, in this instance blue, pink and yellow for baby. here is a sample.

Dingbats converted to bmp then svg
Re: Dingbats converted to bmp then svg
Cool! So you have to change it to a .bmp first?

Yes, what you do is in Inkscape you find your ttf. Use the select tool to select it. In the edit mode find make bitmap and choose that and seperate the two copies. Delete the bottom one. Select the graphic again and in View option go to display mode and choose outline. Choose select tool again. Then go to Path and choose trace bitmap. You will have a window that come up and choose update, that will show your ttf/bitmap, then check ok. click on and Delete the big red x. Select tool again. At that point you go to Path then select break apart then click outside of the image and it will have little boxes. Click outside again and each piece will come a part and you can save your broken apart pieces to svg then import it to scal to cut on your cricut. I wish I was better at explaining then I am, but this is how I do it. And it is a lot easier then it sounds. It gives a real clean cut.

Is there some value to making it a bitmap first? I've been importing dings into inkscape and saving them as svgs.
Re: Dingbats converted to bmp then svg
So much to learn! Maybe I should just stick to fonts and dings!

Okay, Grammy, would you back it up a step for me. I'm a little slow here. How do I find my ttf in inkscape? For example, I know your buggy was originally a dingbat, but how did you get to this particular selection in inkscape so that you could select it with your select tool?

Hello all
answering the LAST two questions on why change into bmt and the other where to find ttf. The reason I chose changing the ttf to bmp was the sharpness of the breakapart pieces, and only for that reason.
some of my ttfs are a little rough to me, but you can do it either way. Now on the TTFs they are found in the side gadget bar under A. I'm sure I'll find easier ways to do it, but for now this way works for me.

Ok, thank you. I'm going to give this a try later today when I get home. I loved your buggy btw. I downloaded it, but I'd really like to figure out how to do this myself. Thanks for the instructions.

One thing I forgot about converting ttfs to Bmps. Soimetimes it works and for some reason some of the ttfs don't work. And if I am right on this after conversion to bmps anyone can see and cut them in scal. If you don't convert to bmps and someone tries to see them and they
don't have the same font or ttf's they wont be able to print or cut them. Have a wonderful time playing with inkscape and scal.

I did it, Grammy! Your instructions were perfect. But one more question...is there a way to view all that a particular dingbat has ito offer in inkscape? In other words, how did you know what key to type to get the buggy?
