Help with selecting all

I am new to all this and at the point to select all in inkscape but I cannot get all of it selected. I am using Susanbluerobot's tutorial (she used a mouse in a car). So right now I have my 4 images with pieces out of all of them. I have tried everything I can think of and know it has to be something easy I am missing. I can click select all but nothing happens. I have tried to box it all up and still nothing. Any ideas? I have been playing with it now for a couple of hours and so frustrated over this easy part! Thanks!

Make sure it's in the select mode by clicking on the black arrow in the upper left side of the screen. While holding down the shift key, click on all the items you want to select. Or, while holding down the left click on your mouse, drag it around all the items you want to select. Hope I made sense.

Thank you! I am going to go back and try this. I somehow got it to work by closing and reopening it at some point but didn't really know what I did. Now i have it all about an inch big so gotta work on why it is so so tiney when I open it in SCAL.

SCAL imports at the default size you see in the fonts/shapes palette. Set it to the height of your image (which you can read off the height box in Inkscape when everything is selected) and it will come in at the right size, or bring it in at any height and type the height in the SCAL height box with keep proportions checked.
