Cutter cuts image several times

when I import or trace an image into scal the image has 4 or 5 layers on top of each other. you can't see them on the screen but if I choose break apart . I can delete them one at a time. I am importing them from photo shop elements. How can I get all these layers to merge. So the cutter will not cut the image 4 or 5 times. What is the best type of file to save art work in.

Check the Layers window to make sure there are not multiple layers of the same shape which would result in multiple cuts.

This can happen if you are doing a Trace with the Color mode set and have too many colors set where it will try to trace slight shade variations of certain colors which may look like a single shape on the screen, but actually adds extra layers for each color.
If this is the case, change the mode to Monochrome.
