Another Newbie to SCAL

Can someone please point me in the direction of a tutorial that will explain how to take an image from the internet and import it into either Inkscape or SCAL? I have found alot of tutorials once you have transfered images but nothing from the very beginning. I have been able to download a few fonts (gone through all the steps) but where they go on my computer is a total mystery to me. I have checked in Microsoft Word fonts list and they are not there. Not in Inkscape or SCAL either.
Right now I have the trial version of SCAL because if I can't figure it out in the 10 day trial period, it's kind of a waste of money to continue. But I really want to know how to use it. I have downloaded Inkscape and I have the Cricut Expression with updated software. (2.3) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you download a picture, save it as a bmp file. If you want, make a file where everything you download goes, so you can always find it. Once you have it saved, go to Inkscape. Go to the File drop down menu and click Import. Find the picture/bitmap you want and open it. Then go to the Path menu, and click Trace Bitmap. A box will appear. You can select a way to trace the bitmap, you need to click "update" with each selection to preview it. Once you find your best option, click OK. Your traced image will be on top of your original image, move the top copy, delete the bottom one and voila.
As for your fonts, do a search based on the name of the font. That's the only way you can find where it went. It is probably still zipped, or at least has not been installed. Once you find it, right click on it. There should be an install option, click on that and it should show up.
Hope this helps.

I tried that and had no result. I have found some of the fonts that I downloaded but they are not showing up in either SCAL or Inkscape. I downloaded them and extracted them and the only thing I can do with them is view them in a little pop-up window that opens when I click open. But that's just a picture of the images. And when I try to import them to SCAL or Inkscape I open the folder where I just viewed them and they are not there so I can't choose them to import. What am I doing wrong?
Please help. Thank You

Another Question: I have the trail version of SCAL and the Library box, the properties box and the other box are covering the screen. In the real version, are the boxes over the screen or not? I have to keep moving them in order to see the cutting map. Thanks

What little popup window are you referring to? Is this a Windows popup box or the fonts window in SCAL or something else? You do not import fonts into SCAL. If you have Windows XP, you copy the TTF file to the C:\Windows\Fonts folder. That's it. There is no install, import, etc. After copying the TTF file, you can open SCAL and you should see the font in the Library popup window. When you click on a font, you will see the font in the display window. You can make any of these windows larger by putting your cursor in a corner until you see the line with an arrow on either end, click and drag the window to the desired size. If you have a different operating system, you need to follow that system's rules for copying or installing a font.
The only thing I see that you're doing wrong is looking for a way to import a font. In SCAL, there is no such thing. I hope I'm helping, if not, ask more questions!

No, unfortunately, the full version has the windows in the same positions. The windows should stay in the same place as they were when you last used the program. So that helps. I think we've posted a Wish List request to have a better layout.

Hi Thanks for all your help. I figured it out. YAY! I found the fonts folder in Windows and I just drag and click the font to that folder. Next objective: import images to SCAL and Inkscape??? Any help out there? Am I using the wrong term? Import? Not totally sure but right now I'm a bit giddy from my success with the fonts, too much tea and it's way past my bed time. LOL
Thanks so much everyone!

Yea to your success!! There are a lot of tutorials on Inkscape in these forums that can help you with specific image Inkscape needs. If you have an SVG file that does not need tweaking (layers separated for one), you can just import it into SCAL and not mess with Inkscape. There are many files in this forum under SVG that you can import into SCAL. File -> Import SVG. For example, you could try SVG -> Florish and find Vines. That's a fairly simply one that is very pretty (as are others!), it would be an easy import and cut.
Your objective to import images into Inkscape is to vague of a question to answer. Perhaps a better route would be to find an image you want to cut and try to cut it. If you have trouble, seek the info in this forum and see if your specific question is answered. If not, post your specific question and we will respond.
And it is way past my bed time too! G'nite!

Is it possible to copy a pdf file to a bmp file? I tried to save it as a bmp file and it would not allow it. I have an image in this format and would like to change it so I can cut it. Thanks for you help

You could need to convert it. I just typed "PDF to BMP" in Google and got a lot of hits. I suspect you would just need to investigate those to find a freebie and to the conversion. If you are trying to bring the image into Inkscape, did you try either opening or importing it? If you can, I don't think you would need a conversion tool.
