OK - I hope this solution could be of help:
Imported Inskcape files come up very small in SCAL and have to be resized. I work in Metric so resizing in inches is a double pain but I'm sure we'll be getting metric soon!
It is possible to move one file over the other in SCAL and resize but it's hit and miss and makes your program crash.
I have no problem with copy and paste in SCAL my files come up the same size - if that was what you were asking!
What I can suggest is : In Inkscape make your welded word then click on it and note the measurements that appear in the top tool bar; then make the mat for the word and note down the measurements.
Import your files eparately to SCAL then resize to the measurements you had in Inkscape by inserting those values in the properties box.
For a simple shape this should be OK.
For paper piecing you will have to do this to every piece - a bit long winded but at least you'll know your cut outs will be proportionate.
In my tut for the mat card I did manage to put the cut out word over the card and resize it but SCAL crashed about 5 times in the process.
There are a lot of problems with this program as IMO it was designed primarily for using the fonts and dingbats -ie. type and cut. What we are basically now requiring the program to do is act as a full blown graphics program with ability to select using click and drag, layer, draw, weld etc which is a huge step up from what it was intended for.
