Ok, Finally got to weld a word trying to make a Thank You card. Supposed to be verrry simple right? Wrong. Typed and welded word in SCAL previewed and all was well. Decided to use shadow all was much better. Tried to cut at slow speed went so slow and paper moved. Upped the speed tried again. (of course during this time had to keep stopping scal and restarting because it kept freezing after I canceled) Still slow grinding crawl. Lessoned pressure to medium, tried again, slow grinding crawl. Tried a different font it cut fine. Re did thank you in this font welded, applied shadow cut slow grinding crawl. AAHH it seems the shadow was the problem. Removed shadow cut normally. Great got my thank you finally! But why doesn't it work with shadow? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Shadows always cut slower due to the nodes in it - I believe when Todd made SCAL it wasa toss up on slow shadow with good shape or reduce the nodes for quicker cutting but reducing the nodes reduces the shape. So I am guessing that the font you have been trying to use must have some shapes that need lots of nodes to cut it and make it look good. But yes, only on shadow.

Shadow does work. It just goes slow because of the nodes as stated in the previous post. Try cutting some letters and the shadows with the cartridge and see what the speed is like on the shadows. I heard that it's slow with the cartridge too - possibly more so on welded words because there are more curves.
If your paper moves around, you need to make sure your mat has good adhesive and the paper is firmly attached.

Thanks for your responses. I read further messages on this after I posted. Glad it's not just me. I'll need to plan for more time if I want shadows or just use a chunkier font. I also read using a techinique in inkscape might work. I'll have to try it out.
