How/can you control speed from within scal. Does machine override? Whenever I cut from SCAL blade returns to upper corner, even if I have manually moved it to a different spot on the mat, anyway to avoid this? SCAL stopped working numerous times while I was trying it out and I had to restart it. (It was not responding) Is it just slow and I should just wait or is this a problem? It also seemed to stop in the middle of a couple of cuts and the only way I could get anything to work was to shut off cricut. What am I doing wrong? Inkscape doesn't respond quite a bit also.

In SCAL under Edit, Preferences you can control the cut speed. Manually moving the blade will not work with SCAL. You would not adjust the paper size this way - instead look at the SCAL screen to see what size of paper you need to use and where to place it.

I have had occasional problems with SCAL not responding. Make sure you have the latest firmware on your Cricut. If this is OK, just make sure to save your file. Every program don't respond at one time or another. You're not doing anything wrong.

For your inkscape issues - on my PC, inkscape stays open even after I have shut it down. To check on this do a control alt delete and see if you see inkscape listed in the processes tab (if you are using Windows). You can click and shut down open instances of Inkscape, as they are occupying your system's resources.

Hope this helps.
