1. My cricut will not load paper unless there is a cartridge. Is this normal? I put in the george cartridge and it worked okay....Then I can cut from scal.
2. How do I cut or import or whatever a graphic.
3. I downloaded a halloween font which had graphics but it cuts with a million lines not just the outline. Why?
4. Do do graphics do I have to have Inkscape? It looks so complicated and I am not that computer savy?
5 I downloaded a graphic for the coloring book site but it saves only as gif. how to I get it into SCAL...
Sorry to be so dumb, but I am trying.....

Yes, you have to have a cartridge in your Cricut to make it cut in SCAL. It doesn't matter which one. For the rest of your questions, please browse thru the forums and get all your questions answered. Also Susan bluerobot at http://www.susanbluerobot.blogspot.com/ will tell you everything you need to know about importing into SCAL and how to tweak your fonts in Inkscape to make them cut one line instead of twenty.
Good luck and don't give up.

More complex fonts and dingbats need cleaning up in inkscape before they cut well. To simply the reason is that the cutter sees each little line, dot, etc as something that needs to be cut.
The blog that the previous poster referenced has a good tutorial on cleaning up fonts in inkscape.

Graphics have to be traced before they can be cut in SCAL.

Try cutting some things from the SVG folders here for some encouragement.

I agree!!! I started using others files and then did lots of reading, I finally got the courage to download inkscape and am now able to do some there, it is worth taking the time to learn but it does take time. As you cut others files and read different blogs it all just starts to click.
