How can you convert a svg file to use in SCAL? I downloaded a file but can't seem to open it . Thanks

Hiya, you need to go File, import svg file, rather than try to open it in SCAL

When I do this, it looks like it will open. It's a blank box, however. Any ideas??

If it was a file you made, then you left out some steps on the conversion process. Using INK, you will have to open the file, select the image, Path>Trace Bitmap, delete the original (if you look at the status bar under the color bar at the bottom of the page, select the image and the status bar shows image, delete it...if it says Path, move it and select the other image). Now you can save the file as an .svg and open in SCAL

this is exactly my problem. yet when I follow instructions
I hightlight item in inkscape
under the color bar it says "Group of 1 object in layer Layer 1. click selection to toggle scale/rotation handle
(the object is selected.....what am i doing wrong.
when I do path>trace bitmap another window opens
but the preview window on the right side is empty.
can you help? thanks

When I import files from the forum to scal. they open just fine. I do notice their extensions are different then mine. sorry for so many questions on the same subject.

When you see "Group of 1..." that means the shape is grouped even though you only have one shape. With the object selected, go to Object>Ungroup. Just select an object and it will say "Path...."

That is the window where you choose which command you want to use when tracing. Most of the time I use the first option Brightness Cutoff. With the object selected, click on Update and you will get an idea of your trace...I usually change the value and that depends on what your are tracing...it is a matter of trial and error. I have gone down as low as 250 when I have a object that has color in and sometimes the color will be removed leaving only the outline.
