I just updated to version 2.038 and noticed this feature. How does it work? It looks the same on the screen and in preview. I want to use it with rhinestones and to engrave.

Click on the font you want and type your word.. Then look at the top where it says Text.. Click on your word then open Text and click on outline Text..

Jo-anne, what is the purpose/change to text that happens when you use "convert text to outline"? Where would I use this feature?

The only reason to do this with recent versions is if you want to edit the nodes or if you use the path operations with text on path. I originally thought that it was so that you can share files with others that don't have the same font, but SCAL embeds the necessary info with the files now so it isn't necessary to have the font anymore.

Can you add nodes?

Yep, you can add, delete, or other node editing. There is also a simplification option in the Path menu.

momaqmom,
I am guessing that what you are looking for to use with rhinestones is probably to convert the text to a single line or something like that. SCAL can't do that and neither can Inkscape. You will need a program like Illustrator that can do a centerline trace.
