Is there a way to switch a node from being a corner with straight sides to a curved node and vice versa?

When I create a line it is difficult to edit it when the corner nodes turn into bezier curve nodes which get distorted as I try to move it.

I would also like the ability to change the corner nodes into bezier nodes when editing shapes.

Is this question while using Inkscape or SCAL2?

This is a questions regarding SCAL.

I don't think there is any way to change the node type in SCAL at this point. They are either smooth or corner depending on how they were made.
