I have found many great SVG's that others are so willing to share but I have a question. Many SVG's are not in layers. I have watched many many tutorials but am still confused. I can select all and break the pieces apart to cut individually but many times there are so many pieces that I lose the whole picture in the process. I hope that i am clearer than mud because I am sure that there is an easier way for me to cut these SVG's.

I am assuming you are talking about the svg you attached as an example? In SCAL you just ungroup, not break apart. You will have the three layers by ungrouping. I have had scal a year, and I still watch video after video on how to do things. There are so many helpful people on this forum that explain things crystal clear for those of us who are as clear as mud. lol.
