Hi gj,
I didn't have to change the color of the photo at all. I did take out the background in Photoshop though. Then I just imported it into Inkscape, did a Path;Trace Bitmap and tweaked the Brightness Cutoff #'s up until it looked like I wanted, did Path; Object to Path, saved it an imported it into SCAL and cut.
I had tried it with some other pictures in the past and didn't like the result but this one seemed to just click.
