this sometimes goes wrong so shout if it's not working and I'll see if I fix it
PLEASE DO NOT SHARE THIS LINK OUTSIDE THIS FORUM WITHOUT ASKING ME FIRST - THANK YOU
once you have this "basic" info you can experiment with different shapes - I know monograms are two or three letters, I wanted to see if four was workable - it is
the files I made during this tut are

hummm....... OK I"ll see if I can fix it..... or I have to give each individual permission <boggle>
give me a few to find out what went wrong this time
You are FANTASTIC!! Thank you so much....I'll have a busy afternoon trying this. I was trying to use nodes to make the letters fit the shape. You way looks so much better. Thanks again!
all that should be able to be done in scal - you just need to find the corresponding commands like:-
inkscape path>exclusion = scal path>back minus front
I seem to be having a problem when I get to path>exclusion. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but it isn't working for me. Maybe tomorrow...I will try again.
let us know what is going wrong and we'll see if we can work out why.
one thing that can happen is the shape is not a path (the info bar at the bottom of the screen says one of the objects is not a path)
this normally means something is grouped - just select objects and look at the bottom bar, if you see it say group of X objects that's most likely the one causing the problem
or you can just select everything and object>ungroup - just be careful when moving things and this can leave bits behind like the centre of letters like "e" or "B" or "O" etc
