I am doing exactly what you said but still get the box saying 'The path cannot be split'

I used a doily type image from svgcuts.com and think I may have found the problem. I wanted to break the path on each side as in our discussions, and found that it kept saying it could not do that...but there happened to be on node on top almost of the other on each side. When I highlighted a node in each spot and deleted it...there was the other underneath. So, now when I drag the narrow box to catch them...it worked.

you could try putting the CB on it's own layer and then lock it. that way you won't /can't select it unless you unlock it
