You have to have both Design Studio plus the cartridges the designer used to be able to cust those designs.
However you can design them yourself in SCAL just using what they did as a reference.

Go on be creative :D

But if someone can think of a way of putting together a scut file that could be shared then I would be happy to host something.

The only way I can think of doing it is through Inkscape, but even that's not really easy. Like you said, part of the ease was due to being able to see the multiple mats within the preview. I wonder if the layers in Inkscape would sort of work at least for the designing part? You can turn specific layers on and off, lock and unlock them. So, for example, if you knew where you wanted the L and E of LOVE to be, you could place them and lock the layers, then space the O and V as you see fit. You'd end up having to save the pieces separately for import to SCAL but it could be done. Not as easy as DS (for once), but I think it could be done.
Using the layers is great for designing and you can use the lib software and add to the Shape Librarey. I don't know if that software ever caught on but I think it is great. Put svg file into the program and it creates a shape library and all your files are in one place...add them to SCAL mat just like you add any other shape from the library. If you set your shape at 7 in in INK, set the Shape library size the same and "voila"
Doin the Bug...ain't nothin wrong if you wanna do da Bug all nite long...
