It looks like you used Path/Break apart. If you need to adjust the letters, either use Ungroup or tracking. I was able to weld with 2.043 without using Ungroup though.

Thanks Heather. I think I did use break apart. But i usually only use that when ungroup is unavailable. I'll redesign a new one and check on that.

I did select all, then break apart, then select all again then merge and it did fine.
