After SEVERAL hrs of working on this, I'm finally done! I used the first 'set' to create lots of combinations (I've uploaded them to my blog).
My orginal scan wasn't very clean so I had to pretty much adjust EVERY node! I'm sure someone knows of an easier way to do this but I dont' know of any (yet) .
The "S" in one of the pieces is just a place holder for any initial ...

Cleaning up nodes is a lot of work. Next time, you might try cleaning up one of the elements ie. the big corner flourish that is the same then copy paste and rotate. That way you only have to do it once instead of four times.

Luckily I did think of that. That's why all the 'same' pieces are identical otherwise i'd still be working on it !!
But even in doing that there were lots of pieces and I had to clean up each one - it was a lot of work - lots of nodes and lots of fixing needed.

That is excellent. It won't be long before you will be posting some artworks that you create on your own after all the cool things you have learned to do with Inkscape.
