Still on the point of learning how to make patterns.in inkscape (best way is to
use other peoples patterns and convert with them which is what i did with this

Hi Susan
I was trying to do some of this last weekend as I have a book on pop up patterns but I couldn't get the image to good enough quality to make it work. So thanks for this link as I can continue my play with this.

So just to get an idea of what you did - you took her pattern as an image and imported it into inkscape and then trace bitmap and then go from there as normal - is that right? Anything different that you had to do with this over a standard jpg image?

Thanks for posting - I had put it in the too hard basket for a while so now will haul it out and have another look at it.

What i also do after importing it into inkscape i then view outline , trace and then throw away the jpeg. Then i break apart
that way i can take away most of the double lines that are not needed (cause if you leave it as is it will cut everything twice so what i do is go to everything and take away the second line of everything that i can that will leave it in tacked like the double line around flowers and butterfly wings the slits for pop out were left as double lines (don't cut the fold lines i removed them while it was broken apart too )

hope this gives you a better understanding

MAINLY it is the double lines that STUMPED me for soo long till I outlined and break apart

Thanks again Susuan, will try it this weekend I hope.
I did remember to remove the fold lines when I was playing before - that would have been a real mess if I had forgotten that one!

Hi Susan

If you get a minute can you give me some more pointers please?
I have got the image into inkscpae, traced it and break apart. All good. I am doing the butterfly one and have the first image which is the one with all the little petals. I can see the double outlines on everything and allt he little petals are very easy - I have been able to delete out all the outlines and they are lovely and clean. My problem is with the flowers and center parts of the butterfly. It seems the extra lines just keep going around on themselves and forming both inner and outer lines (hope that makes sense) so as I try to delete them they eventually delete everything. I can't get it to stop at the right time. I have been using the nodes delete but it is like a very long ball of cotton and I haven't got a pair of scissors to stop it unwinding.
Can you give me some idea on how you removed the extra lines on the flowers and inner butterfly please?

Thanks

Thanks Susan for that.
Well I won with a lot of stuborness and patience. My problem seemed to have been a bit more advanced than your instructions but I chugged along and eventually got there. What I found was that some of the double lines you can't just delete unfortunately. So I went to the nodes and moved one node at a time so that both lines doubled over each other and then it worked ok with the cutting.

I don't know if that is the best way to do it but it worked for now and I will continue to play and see if I can get it to work better.

But thanks so much for your tips and for posting your message about making the card which is what got me going in the first place and I am very happy with what I have achieved.
