Do I need to upgrade to SCAL 2?

Post by KayM »

I've had SCAL 1 for 9 months, and never did anything with it. Two weeks ago I decided it was time to learn the program, and tried to download the upgrade of firmware for my cricut. Something was wrong with my cricut, and it wouldn't accept the firmware. Provocraft was great, and sent a new E to me, as I was still under warranty. I just got the new E and plugged it in today, so over the next few days, I intend to learn SCAL.

My question: what originally kept me from trying SCAL was my fear over Inkscape. Should I upgrade to SCAL 2, as I've read you don't need Inkscape for it? What can the new version do, that the original will not? Thanks in advance for any advice....Kay

Some people do a lot with inkscape, like you, I don't care for it and don't want to learn it. I get along just fine with SCAL2

SCAL2 has the ability to trace bitmapped images to make cuttings. So if you ever do, or plan to do, that sort of thing, SCAL2 is worth it. Also, SCAL2 handles layers whereas SCAL1 did not. Many of the .svg files that folks are making now have layers in them for things like separating the different colors of a layered cut, or adding score marks. You could start to bump into .svgs that you can't use.
