Can someone please explain how to weld inside an object like a box? For example the Christmas tree box posted on this forum.

It isn't welded. If you are working directly in SCAL, just place the cutout shape where you want it inside the other shape.
If you are working in Inkscape, you can just place the shape where you want it, or you can select the cutout shape and the outer shape, and from the menu, Path/Exclusion. It will cut the same either way. HTH
