Cricut doing away with SCAL?

Post by Smitty »

Hi, I am new to this board and haven't purchase the SCAL yet. I have read in a few places that Cricut is going to (may have already) do an update so that SCAL doesn't work. I haven't downloaded the necessary items from Cricut to work the SCAL and I am wondering if anyone knows if Cricut has already made this change? I'd hate to download the Cricut items and purchase SCAL if this has already happened. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Cricut can't do away with SCAL, because they are two different companies. Just nasty rumors. Craft Edge will stay ahead of the game.

Todd,
I hope you are right! I went ahead and downloaded the cricut software last night (hoping they haven't updated it to the point that it will cause problems with SCAL). I'm trying to find all of the "pointers" and instructions I can on SCAL - so at least I will know what to do once I purchase it! I used to craft a lot before my daughter was born and when she was little. I stopped as I didn't have time. She's now 17 and I find myself with the extra time for crafting and I'm hoping I can get my creative juices flowing once again! Let me tell you, it's been an uphill battle! I've had that side of my brain shut off for so long I find it difficult to think of things to make and do! I'm hoping it's like riding a bike (LOL).

Have a great day!

Kim,
This is a great place to get started again. There are tons of SVG files here ready to cut to help you along. Make sure you post pictures of your creations.

Last year Provocraft put a block in that stopped SCAL working if you had updated the latest version of DS. If they should do it again - a) it is only a problem if you need to update DS for say new cartridges that they have made available in DS or a new feature they have in DS and b) Todd the designer of SCAL will find a work around and make SCAL available again just as he did the first time.

So once you have SCAL up and running now, if Provocraft come out with an update to DS and you don't want to use their new features or cartridges then you don't have to update and nothing will happen to SCAL.

I hope that makes sense - just keep a watch on the message boards here - if a block is put in again then we will find out pretty fast and everyone here will keep everyone updated.

Don't let the rumours that a block is coming (as we don't know for sure anything yet) stop you from enjoying SCAL now.

I totally agree with Raewyn and Todd! Unless you have DS (Design Studio) and NEED to update the firmware you won't have a problem!

I have DS and haven't used it since I purchased SCAL. I haven't purchase a cartridge since buying SCAL either and don't plan on purchasing anymore. I guess that means I won't ever have to worry about any updates and SCAL not working!!

lol thank you everyone... I can't wait to get started! I did go ahead and download DS to my laptop, but haven't connected it to my cricut. I haven't checked to see if the cricut needs updating yet ( I just purchased it this last December). I can't wait to check out all of the designs you have all uploaded and I will put some of mine up (if I get this all figured out and working)! You guys are great!

Here is a blog with an old version of Design Studio for updating the firmware. http://myfaqcricutds.blogspot.com/2008/ ... of-ds.html
