More dingbat questions.

Post by lovemypoodle »

I have been using the inkscape tutorials and learning sooooo much. But, I have more questions.
1. If I want to cut out a digbat such as a dog do I have to cut one in shadow mode and one in normal and then laayer them? Is there a different way to get a somewhat detailed cut?
2. Someone mentioned using a page from a coloring book and tracing it in Inkscape. Do you scan into the computer and then freehand trace it or is there another way to trace it?

THANKS for all the help!

if you can open the dingbat in scal, you should be able to cut it from there without going through inkscape.

as far as how to cut it, it just really depends on how it traces & what you want it to look like. you can make something look just like an image you have, it just takes a bit of work to get it there. I don't use the method you mentioned, I manipulate the individual nodes to my liking. I move them, delete or add them, etc.

for a coloring page, you can scan & save the image & trace in inkscape or you can save one that you dl from the web & trace that :)

So when you trace in Inkscape do you trace with one of the tools like the pencil and then save the tracing as a different file?

no, I use the auto trace feature similar to what you do with a title/words.

shorcuts:

for images/coloring pages:
basically, open your file in inkscape
view: display mode: outline
path: oject to path: trace bitmap
in pop up window set brightness to .650: click ok

this gives you an outline of your image. it takes some work to manipulate the nodes. click the small arrow w/3 quares on it, just under the large arrow on the tool bar to the left and you'll see all the individual nodes in the file. you can move/delete or add--just play around with the tool options for that at the top.
