how do i create a background layer...for example if i have a boat svg file and i want a white background layer on the bottom of the boat...the layer needs to be larger than the boat...but is there a simple feature in scale 2 that will create a background layer... another example...if i have the text...

I want to cut a word using SCAL and/or inkscape... I want the word one color and I want a shadow around it a different color...guess like a layered effect...
